Consider the following abstract setting (cf. [\textit{D. Bakry}, Lect. Notes Math. 1581, 1--114 (1994; Zbl 0856.47026)], [\textit{M. Ledoux}, Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse, Math. (6) 9, No. 2, 305--366 (2000; Zbl 0980.60097)], [\textit{D. Bakry} et al., Analysis and geometry of Markov diffusion operators. Cham: Springer (2014; Zbl 1376.60002)]: a set $X$ and a linear operator L acting on an algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of functions on $X$. Define the ``carré du champ'' operator $\Gamma (f,g)=\frac{1}{2}[\text{L}(fg)-f\text{L}g-g\text{L}f]$ for $f,g \in \mathcal{A}$. Suppose that L is a diffusion operator, which means that $\Gamma (f,f)\geq 0$ for all $f \in \mathcal{A}$ and that L satisfies a certain chain rule. Define the iterated carré du champ operator $\Gamma_2(f,g)=\frac{1}{2}[\text{L}\Gamma(f,g)-\Gamma(f, \text{L}g)-\Gamma(g,\text{L}f)]$. In this paper the author defines the Ricci tensor and the $N$-Ricci tensor in terms of the $\Gamma_2$-operator, and derives Bochner's formula in this general setting. He also investigates the behavior of the $N$-Ricci tensor and of the Bakry-Émery/Lott-Sturm-Villani conditions under drift transformation, time change and conformal transformation.
