The aim of this paper is to study time discretizations of the Vlasov-HMF equation. The solutions starting in a small Sobolev neighbourhood satisfies a linearized stability criterion. The main theorems state that the solutions exhibit a scattering behaviour to a modified state, implying a nonlinear Landau damping effect. The proofs consist of several steps and use backward error analysis, energy estimates, Fourier transform, Taylor formula, integration by parts, Young, Gronvall and Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities.
