Let \(C\) be a smooth projective curve of genus \(g\). For all positive integers \(d, r, k\) let \(B^k_{r,d}\) be the set of all rank \(r\) stable vector bundles \(E\) on \(C\) with \(\deg (C)=d\) and \(h^0(E)\geq k\). It has been known (mainly by works of the last author) when \(C\) is general for certainly \(g, r, d, k\) there is an irreducible component \(B\) of \(B^k_{r,d}\) with the expected dimension. In the paper under review the authors prove the injectivity of the Petri map of a general \(E\in B\). The neccesity to assume that both \(C\) and \(E\) are general was known (in particular for a general \(C\) in this interesting range of \((g,r,d,k)\) there is \(F\in B^k_{r,d}\) with non-injective Petri map. The proofs use a degeneration of \(C\) to a reducible curve with \(g\) components consisting of elliptic curves.
