A virtual knot is the result of drawing a knot diagram on paper with non-zero genus. The supporting genus of a given virtual knot is the minimal genus surface in which the virtual knot diagram can be realized. In this paper, the author generalizes a theorem of Kauffman-Murasugi-Thistlethwaite relating the span of the Jones polynomial of a classical knot represented by a proper alternating connected diagram to the virtual case, obtaining a new formula which reduces to the classical result for supporting genus 0. This result provides an easily checkable combinatorial condition for showing that a virtual knot is not classical.
