The papers starts with an exhibition of a minimal free resolution of the (oriented or unoriented) matroid ideal associated to a given hyperplane arrangement in real affine space. To this aim, cellular resolutions from hyperplane arrangements are studied. Next this method is applied to arbitrary matroid ideals. It turns out that the graded Betti numbers of oriented matroid ideals can only take the values \(0\) and \(1\) and that their quotient rings are Cohen-Macaulay. The paper finishes with some rather technical results about the cocharacteristic polynomial of unimodular toric arrangements which may be given by graphic or cographic matroids.
