The authors study the problem of the existence and the holomorphicity of the Monge-Ampère foliation associated to a plurisubharmonic solution of the complex Monge-Ampère equation even at points of arbitrary degeneracy. The authors prove that, if the plurisubharmonic exhaustion function \(\rho\) is real analytic on \(M_\ast =\{\rho>0\}\), then the bundle \(\text{Ann}(dd^cu)\) (\(u=\log\rho\)) extends as an integrable complex line bundle on \(M_\ast\) generated by an extension of the complex gradient \(Z\) of \(\rho\). Furthermore, it is also proved that the extended vector field \(Z\), and therefore the associated Monge-Ampère foliation, is holomorphic. The same result is shown to be true if the exhaustion function \(\rho\) is of class \(C^{\infty}\) on \(M_\ast\), but the degeneracy is not too high. As a consequence, they provide a positive answer to a question of \textit{D. Burns} [Ann. Math. 115, 349--373 (1982; Zbl 0507.32011)] regarding the characterizations of plurisubharmonic homogeneous polynomials and extend the results of \textit{P. M. Wong} [in: Complex analysis of several variables, Proc. Symp., Madison/Wis. 1982, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 41, 225--252 (1984; Zbl 0587.32029)] on the classification of complete weighted circular domains.
