In this paper Fano-like manifolds are studied, i.e. complex manifolds that after a finite sequence of blowings up become Fano, in other words, manifolds that are blowings down of Fano varieties. A Fano-like manifold \(X\) is said to be simple if there is a smooth submanifold \(Y\) of \(X\) such that the blow-up of \(X\) along \(Y\) is Fano; the aim of the paper is to describe the geometry of simple non-projective Fano-like (Moishezon) manifolds. It is first proved that every Fano manifold has only a finite number of smooth blowings down and that there is only a finite number of deformation type of simple Fano-like manifolds of given dimension. Then more detailed results on the connections between the invariants of Fano-like manifolds and their Fano blowings up are given. The proofs use Mori theory and results on Hilbert schemes.
