Congruence modular varieties are characterized by sequences of ternary Gumm terms or 4-ary Day terms. Congruence distributive varieties are characterized by a sequence of Jonsson terms. Such sequences can have variable lengths. The author proves that if a variety is characterized by Gumm terms and Jonsson terms, then the minimal lengths of these sequences differ at most by 1. If a congruence distributive variety has \(r+1\) Day terms, then it has \(r^2 + r + 3\) Jonsson terms.
