If \(A = R/I\) is a graded Artinian algebra, we say that \(A\) has the \textit{weak Lefschetz property (WLP)} if, for a general linear form \(L\), the induced multiplication map \(\times L : [A]_i \rightarrow [A]_{i+1}\) has maximal rank for each \(i\). We say that \(A\) has the \textit{strong Lefschetz property} (SLP) if \(\times L^m : [A]_i \rightarrow [A]_{i+m}\) has maximal rank for each \(i\) and each \(m\). Of course SLP implies WLP. There are many open problems concerning both WLP and SLP, an important one of which is whether every complete intersection in every codimension has either (or both) of these properties. An affirmative answer for SLP is known ([\textit{R. P. Stanley}, SIAM J. Algebraic Discrete Methods 1, 168--184 (1980; Zbl 0502.05004)], [\textit{J. Watanabe}, Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 11, 303--312 (1987; Zbl 0648.13010)] independently) in the monomial case in arbitrary codimension, and for WLP is known in codimension \(\leq 3\) [\textit{T. Harima} et al., J. Algebra 262, No. 1, 99--126 (2003; Zbl 1018.13001)]. In this paper the authors prove an injectivity result for \(\times L : [A]_{d-1} \rightarrow [A]_d\) when \(I\) is a complete intersection generated by forms of degree \(d\), generalizing a result of the reviewer and \textit{U. Nagel} [Collect. Math. 64, No. 2, 211--233 (2013; Zbl 1291.13019)]. Then they prove that when \(d=2\) and the codimension is at most 5, the full WLP holds for \(A\). This was previously known (the reviewer and Nagel) only in codimension \(\leq 4\). To achieve these results the authors introduce some interesting and useful new techniques.
