The authors study translation surfaces of infinite topological type. More precisely, they consider two concepts that originate in this setting by \textit{J. P. Bowman} and \textit{F. Valdez}: linear approaches and rotational components (see [Isr. J. Math. 197, 69--97 (2013; Zbl 1284.30039)]. They study several known and new examples to illustrate these concepts. One of the results obtained in this paper is that every finite topological space arises as a space of rotational components.
