The aim of this paper is to consider the Cauchy problem associated to the recently introduced higher order KdV-BBM type model by \textit{J. L. Bona} et al. [J. Nonlinear Sci. 28, No. 2, 543--577 (2018; Zbl 1384.35111)]. This higher order Hamiltonian model describes the unidirectional propagation of water waves. The authors prove global existence for given data in the Sobolev space \(H^s\), \(s\geq1\). They also prove an ill-posedness result by showing that the flow-map is not continuous if the given data has Sobolev regularity \(s<1\). The results obtained in this work are sharp. This paper is organized as follows: The first section is an introduction to the subject. In section 2 the authors prove the global well-posedness result obtained in this paper. In section 3 the authors consider the ill-posedness issue for the Cauchy problem mentioned above and prove the main result.
