In this article, the two-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operator on a square lattice with a sufficiently small potential is considered. The authors show that the spectrum is an interval assuming that the period is odd in at least one dimension. Furthermore, they show that the spectrum might consist of at most two intervals and that a gap might only open at energy zero. Hence, the corresponding results improve Krüger's results. The results might be interpreted as a discrete version of the Bethe-Sommerfeld conjecture. Finally, the authors consider an application for the study of two-dimensional almost-periodic operators.
