Let \((M,\omega)\) be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension \(n\), and let \(\alpha\) be a second Kähler metric on \(M\) which is unrelated to \(\omega\). The J-flow is the parabolic equation \(\frac{\partial}{\partial t} \omega(t) = -\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}\Lambda_{\omega(t)}\alpha\), \, \(\omega(0) = \omega\), where \(\Lambda\) denotes the trace. The stationary solutions of this flow are metrics \(\omega\) such that \(\Lambda_\omega\alpha = c\), where \(c\) is a constant. It is known that if there exists a solution of the last equation, then the J-flow converges to this solution. In this paper, the authors study the J-flow from the point of view of an algebro-geometric stability condition. In terms of this the authors give a lower bound for the natural associated energy functional, and show that the blowup behavior found by Fang-Lai is reflected by the optimal destabilizer. The authors prove a general existence result on complex tori. In this work the authors also propose a new numerical condition which they suppose to be equivalent to the existence of a solution \(\Lambda_\omega\alpha = c\): A solution to the equation exists if and only if for all \(p\)-dimensional subvarieties \(V\subset M\), where \(p=1,2,\ldots,n-1\), we have \(\int_V c\omega^p - p\omega^{p-1}\wedge\alpha > 0\).
