The author studies the core of a certain class of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero, with the ultimate aim of providing an explicit formula under some additional technical assumptions on the class of ideals. In particular, the author studies properties of strongly stable ideals, e.g., residual properties, sliding depth, and the \(G_d\) property. (For an integer \(d\), an ideal \(I\) satisfies the \(G_d\) property if the number of generators of \(I_{\mathfrak p}\) is less than or equal to the height of \(\mathfrak p\) for every prime ideal \(\mathfrak p\) of the ring of height less than \(d\) containing \(I\).) Taking \(I\) to be a strongly stable ideal in \(k[X_1, \dots, X_d]\) of degree two satisfying the \(G_d\) property, the author shows that \(I\) also satisfies the Artin-Nagata property \(AN_{d-1}\), a condition defined by \textit{B.~Ulrich} [Contemp.~Math.~159, 373--400 (1994; Zbl 0821.13008)], but fails to satisfy stronger standard depth conditions, like the strongly Cohen-Macaulay condition. Besides the use of tableaus as in [\textit{A.~Corso} and \textit{U.~Nagel}, J. Algebr. Comb. 28, No. 3, 425--437 (2008; Zbl 1179.13008) and Trans.~Am.~Math.~Soc.~361, No. 3, 1371--1395 (2009; Zbl 1228.05068)], one of the author's techniques in proving the main result is the use of the diagonal ideal of a strongly stable ideal, as in a preprint of \textit{A.~Corso, U.~Nagel, S.~Petrovic} and \textit{C.~Yuen} [``Blow-up algebras of Ferrers ideals are determinantal'', in preparation]. In particular, it is shown that the diagonal ideal of \(I\), with \(I\) as above, is a reduction of \(I\) with reduction number at most one less than the height of \(I\). Finally, the formula for the core of \(I\) is given as \(I\mathfrak m^{\text{height}(I)-1}\), where \(\mathfrak m\) is the irrelevant maximal ideal of the polynomial ring.
