A nilmanifold \(G/\Gamma\) is a compact quotient of a real nilpotent Lie group \(G\) by a discrete subgroup \(\Gamma\). In the present paper the author studies deformations of nilmanifolds wich are complex parallelizable, i.e., which have trivial holomorphic tangent bundle. In particular, he shows that the Kuranishi space of complex parallelizable nilmanifolds \(G/\Gamma\) with \(G\) \(s\)-step nilpotent can be described by polynomial equations of degree at most \(s\) but that the Kuranishi space is almost never smooth, confirming that even for this well behaved class there is no general or generic unobstructedness result. He describes the Kuranishi space in detail for several examples and he also studies when small deformations of a complex parallelizable nilmanifold remain complex parallelizable. Finally, he obtains the first explicit examples of compact complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle (or even holomorphic symplectic structure) which have non-reduced Kuranishi space.
