This paper reinforces the relation between the canonical covers, used by Dugundji to prove his famous Extension theorem, and the way to describe the dimension of certain subsets of compact spaces in terms of the corresponding complements. In Section 2 the author introduces the basic definitions and notations and he states an easy criterium to detect coarse equivalences. Section 3, which is the core of the paper, contains the main technical tools and results. Given a nowhere dense closed subset \(X\) of a metrizable compact space \(\widetilde{X}\), he characterizes the dimension of \(X\) in terms of the multiplicity of the canonical covers of the complementary of \(X\), especially in some particular cases, like when \(\widetilde{X}\) is the Hilbert cube or the finite dimensional cube and X, a \(Z\)-set of \(\widetilde{X}\). In this process, he solves related questions in the literature.
