Using a new approach to multiple operator integrals, the author has improved earlier results by Sten'kin on the existence of higher derivatives of the function \(t\rightarrow \phi (A + tK)\), where \(A\) is a self-adjoint operator (not necessarily bounded) and \(K\) is a bounded self-adjoint operator. Actually the author has shown that if \(\phi \in B^2_{\infty, 1}(\mathbb R)\cap B^{1}_{\infty, 1}(\mathbb R)\), then \(t\rightarrow \phi (A + tK)\) has a second derivative that is a bounded operator; a representation of this second derivative is also given by means of multiple operator integrals. The author has also considered a similar problem for unitary operators.
