A quantum version of the central limit theorem proved by the same authors [Lett. Math. Phys. 68, 103-112 (2004; Zbl 1078.81080), see alsomath-ph/0312045] is used to compute spectral densities and partition functions for lattices of quantum systems with finite range interaction. This approximation is tested numerically for an Ising spin chain in a transverse field. In particular, it is shown that the estimation of the mean free energy fails in the low temperature regime.
