The goal of this paper is to show that multiplicities of automorphic representations can be expressed in terms of cohomology groups with certain infinite dimensional coefficient spaces. This relates a conjecture of Patterson to the Lewis correspondence. The main result of the paper states in particular that for \(\Gamma\) a torsion-free arithmetic subgroup of a split semisimple Lie group \(G\), and \(\pi\) an irreducible unitary principal series representation, the multiplicity of \(\pi\) in the space \(L^{2}(\Gamma\backslash G)\) equals the dimension of \(H^{d-r}_{\text{cusp}}(\Gamma, \pi^{\omega})\), where \(d\) is the dimension of the symmetric space attached to \(G\) (using a maximal compact subgroup), \(r\) is the real rank of \(G\), and \(\pi^{\omega}\) is the subspace of analytic vectors in \(\pi\).
