Skew braces were introduced in [\textit{L. Guarnieri} and \textit{L. Vendramin}, Math. Comput. 86, No. 307, 2519--2534 (2017; Zbl 1371.16037)] to study non-degenerate set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. It is challenging to describe all skew braces of a given order, so at first instance, one should first study specific classes of skew braces. In this paper, the authors study \textit{\(\lambda\)-anti-homomorphic skew braces}, namely, skew braces \((G, \cdot, \circ)\) for which the map \(\lambda: (G, \cdot) \to \mathrm{Aut}(G, \cdot)\) is an anti-homomorphism. It is shown that \(\lambda\)-anti-homomorphic skew braces are useful to characterize symmetric skew braces, which are skew braces also exchanging the role of \(\cdot\) and \(\circ\). Moreover, the notion of \textit{brace system} is introduced to generalize the concepts of brace block [\textit{A. Koch}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 226, No. 9, Article ID 107047, 15 p. (2022; Zbl 1498.16043)] and multi-brace [\textit{V. G. Bardakov} and \textit{V. Gubarev}, J. Algebra 596, 328--351 (2022; Zbl 1492.17019)]. They are provided some methods to construct symmetric brace systems and symmetric skew braces.
