The authors study a model of two competing species moving by diffusion in a bounded homogeneous environment. They are interested in the possibility of coexistence of two such species, that is in the existence and stability of equilibrium solutions of their reaction-diffusion equations with both components positive. In particular, they study how domain shape affects these equilibria. They are able to give sufficient conditions that the species coexist in a domain modeling two isolated populations connected by a narrow corridor. This coexistence occurs even though one of the species would be driven to extinction in the case of a convex domain.
