    Let \(\Lambda:0=\lambda_ 0<\lambda_ 1<\cdots\) be an infinite sequence of positive numbers. For \(f\in L^ p(0,1)\) \(1\leq p<2\) let \[ \mu_ n(f,\Lambda)_ p=\inf_{b_ k}\| f(x)-\sum^ n_{k=0}b_ kx^{\lambda_ k}\|_ p. \] The present paper deals with the following theorem of \textit{T. Ganelius} and \textit{D. Newman} [Am. J. Math. 98, 259-309 (1976; Zbl 0333.41013)] Theorem. If \(1\leq p\leq\infty\), \(n\in N\), and if \(f\) is absolutely continuous on \([0,1]\), then \[ \mu_ n(f,\Lambda)_ p\leq A_ p\varepsilon_ n(\Lambda)_ p\| f'\|_ p, \] where \(A_ p<2^{2q}\) in a numerical constant and \(\varepsilon(\Lambda)_ p=\max_{y\geq 0}\left|{B_ p(1+iy)\over 1+iy}\right|\), \(B_ p(z)\) being the Blaschke product. The main result in this paper in that for \(1\leq p<2\), \(A_ p<42\).
