The author corrects and extends a result by \textit{Ch. Kenney} and \textit{A. J. Laub} [Int. J. Control 50, 707-730 (1989; Zbl 0685.65036)]on the Christoffel-Darboux identity for adjacent families of orthogonal polynomials. Theorems 1 and 2 give (in the most general setting of linear functionals) the generalized identity for orthogonal polynomials 1 resp. 2 diagonals apart. In Theorems 4 and 5 a converse problem is solved: first it is shown that the existence of the Christoffel-Darboux identity for adjacent families implies the well known \(qd\)-relations for those families and secondly it is proved that the existence of a \(qd\)-type relation between two adjacent families implies that they are simultaneously orthogonal families and the relation between the adjacent moment functionals is given (the equivalence between \(qd\)-relations and three-term recurrence relations is used here [cf. the author, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 32, No. 1/2, 17-25 (1990; Zbl 0714.33006)]). A lucidly written paper.
