One of the most common group consensus functions is the plurality rule, which chooses as winners those alternatives which are the first choices of the most decision makers. In a setting where each decision maker is allowed to give just his (her) first choice, this rule called the plurality function, was characterized by the author [Math. Soc. Sci. 21, No. 2, 101-127 (1991; Zbl 0791.90009)]. The present paper reinterprets the above-mentioned paper providing new insights into the characterization and in doing so, has to solve an interesting functional equation.
