The numerical simulation of the radial Schrödinger equation is considered. It is derived an eight order, two-step method which has a larger interval of periodicity than Numerov's method and the sixth-order formula of \textit{J. R. Cash} and the second author [Comput. Phys. Commun. 33, No. 4, 299-304 (1984; MR 86b:65114)]. The performance of the new method is illustrated by three problems of practical interest: Phase shift, resonance and eigenvalue problem.
