The general linear group referred to in the title is \(GL(n+1,q)\). The author is investigating the set \(H(n,q)\) of elements having no non- trivial fixed points. The main result is the development of a recurrence relation for \(H(n+1,q)\) in terms \(H(n,q)\) and \(H(n-1,q)\), where the coefficients depend on \(n\) and \(q\).
