Let \(M,M'\) be hypersurfaces in \(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}\) and \(H:M\to M'\) be a \(CR\) map. The paper is concerned with the generic rank of such \(H\). Conditions on \(M,M'\) are given such that \(H\) is constant, or its generic rank is odd, even, or even equal to \(2n+1\). The conditions are in terms of non-existence of nontrivial complex manifolds contained in \(M,M'\) and also of non-existence of formal holomorphic vector fields tangent to \(M\).
