A ring \(R\) is called quasi-Frobenius (briefly, QF), if \(R\) is left (or right) artinian left (or right) self-injective. The class of QF-rings is one of the most interesting classes of non-semisimple rings. In the present paper the authors obtain several interesting characterizations of QF-rings. One of the main results is Theorem 4 which says that a left self-injective ring \(R\) is QF if and only if \(R/\text{Soc}(_ RR)\) or \(R/\text{Soc}(R_ R)\) is left Goldie. At the end of the paper they consider rings with Krull dimension and show that a commutative self- injective ring with Krull dimension is pseudo-Frobenius (i.e. rings \(R\) whose faithful modules are generators of the category \(R\)-Mod). Reviewer's comments: In fact, part a) of the proof of Theorem 4 provides the following significant fact: (*) A left self-injective semiprimary ring \(R\) is QF iff the left socle of \(R/\text{Soc}(_ RR)\) is finitely generated as a left \(R\)-module. This result shows in particular, that the study of Faith's Conjecture can be reduced to the consideration of the left socle of \(R/\text{Soc}(_ RR)\) (while \(\text{Soc}(_ RR)\) is finitely generated by the left self-injectivity). (Faith's Conjecture: Any left self-injective semiprimary ring is QF. However this is not the subject of the paper under review.) The part b) of the proof of Theorem 4 is incomplete. However, this can be established, for example, by using the argument of proving Theorem 3 (in the paper) to show the fact that a left self-injective ring \(R\) is semiprimary if \(R/\text{Soc}(R_ R)\) satisfies the ascending chain condition on left annihilators. Then (*) applies. In a recent paper ``A note on self-injective perfect rings'' [to appear in Q. J. Math., Oxf. (1994)] \textit{J. Clark} and the reviewer extend (*) to the right and left perfect rings.
