Let \(A_ 1,A_ 2,\dots,A_ m\) and \(C_ 1,C_ 2,\dots,C_ n\) be two sequences of events, and let \(V_ m\) and \(U_ n\), respectively, be the number of those \(A_ j\) and \(C_ k\) which occur. Let \(S_{k,t}\) be the bivariate \((k,t)\)-th binomial moment of the vector \((V_ m,U_ n)\). The author establishes bounds on \(P(V_ m\geq 1,U_ n\geq 1)\) by linear combinations of \(S_{1,1}\), \(S_{1,2}\) and \(S_{2,1}\). These are extensions of optimal univariate bounds. Reviewer's remarks: 1. The dissertation of 1965 in the list of references is due to Éva Galambos and not to the reviewer. 2. Meyer's inequalities quoted in the paper are essentially univariate ones. Hence, beside one inequality in the mentioned dissertation, the present paper can be viewed as the first published bivariate Bonferroni-type inequalities. 3. There are several new publications in the field of bivariate and multivariate Bonferroni-type inequalities: the reviewer and \textit{M.-Y. Lee} [In: Probability theory and applications, eds.: J. Galambos and I. Kátai, Kluwer, Dordrecht, 1992, pp. 143-154], the reviewer and \textit{Y. Xu} [ibid. 155-164 and Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 117, 523-528 (1993)].
