The authors develop an algorithm for finding a column reduced polynomial matrix unimodularly equivalent to a given polynomial matrix modifying Beelen's algorithm [cf. \textit{Th. G. J. Beelen, G. J. van den Hurk}, and the second author, Syst. Control Lett. 10, No. 4, 217-224 (1988; Zbl 0646.65040)].
