A universal algebra \(A\) is said to satisfy the term condition if for any \(n + 1\)-ary term \(p\) and any elements \(a,b \in A\) and \({\mathbf x},{\mathbf y} \in A^ n\) whenever \(p(a,{\mathbf x}) = p(a,{\mathbf y})\) then \(p(b,{\mathbf x}) = p(b,{\mathbf y})\). It is well-known that amongst groups the abelian ones are precisely those satisfying the term condition. In this paper, the author determines the structure of semigroups satisfying the term condition, and as a consequence shows that regular semigroups satisfying the term condition are isomorphic to a direct product of an abelian group, a left zero semigroup and a right zero semigroup.
