The author gives sufficient conditions for oscillation and boundedness of solutions of the functional differential equation \(\ddot x+ \phi(t) g(x(t))= \rho(t)\), on an interval \([t_ 0, \infty)\). The boundedness conditions are generalizations of known criteria for boundedness of solutions of the equation \(\ddot x+g(x)= \rho(t)\), but obviously apply to a larger class of equations. Similarly, various sign and growth conditions are shown to imply the oscillation of all bounded solutions of the same equation. The results generalize classical results of Atkinson, Hartman and Wintner.
