The authors present a backward error analysis of an algorithm for a constrained least squares problem. The constraints have the form of linear equations and the algorithm under study is the null space algorithm [cf. \textit{C. L. Lawson} and \textit{R. J. Hanson}, Solving least squares problems (1974; MR 51.2270)]. Results of numerical experiments illustrating the behaviour of the algorithm are also presented.
