Let \(A\) and \(B\) be unital Banach algebras. A homomorphism \(\Phi: A\to B\) is said to be a symbol mapping if, for each element \(a\) of \(A\), this element is invertible in \(A\) if and only if \(\Phi(a)\) is invertible in \(B\) (in this case \(\Phi(a)\) is called a symbol of \(a\)). The authors characterize Banach algebras with matrix symbols (i.e. \(B\) a algebra of matrix-valued functions and he shows that an algebra possesses a matrix symbol of bounded order if and only if it satisfies an asymptotic polynomial identity.
