    Denote by \(S_ n(f,x)\) the \(n\)th partial sum of the Fourier series of a \(2\pi\)-periodic integrable function \(f\), and let \(S^*(f,x):= \sup\{| S_ n(f,x)|: n\geq 0\}\). The following theorem was proved by the first named author [Math. Jap. 30, 897-912 (1985; Zbl 0585.42006)]: If \(f\) is a continuous \(2\pi\)-periodic function and \(\varphi(t):= e^ t- 1\), then for all \(\alpha> 0\), \[ \int^ \pi_{- \pi} \varphi(\alpha S^*(f,x)) dx< \infty \] and \[ \lim_{n\to\infty} \int^ \pi_{-\pi} \varphi(\alpha| S_ n(f,x)- f(x)|) dx= 0. \] It was also shown [first author, Math. Jap. 36, No. 4, 649-655 (1991; Zbl 0729.42004)] that the above theorem is no longer true for bounded functions. The aim of the present paper is to extend the above results for Fourier series of functions in Orlicz spaces \(L^*_ \varphi:= \bigcup_{\alpha> 0}\varphi(\alpha L)\). Here \(\varphi(\alpha L)\) is the class of functions \(f\) such that \(\int^ \pi_{-\pi} \varphi(\alpha| f(x)|) dx\) \(<\infty\), where \(\varphi\) is a continuous function on \([0,\infty)\), with the properties: \(\varphi(0)= 0\), \(\varphi(t)> 0\) for \(t>0\), and \(\varphi(t)\uparrow \infty\) as \(t\uparrow \infty\).
