In: Algebraic Geometry, Proc. Int. Conf., L'Aquila 1988, Lect. Notes Math. 1417, 129-137 (1990; Zbl 0706.14035), \textit{K. Hulek} posed the question: Do abelian surfaces in \(\mathbb{P}_1 \times \mathbb{P}_3\) exist? In the paper under review the author gives a positive answer to this question. More precisely he determines all abelian surfaces in \(\mathbb{P}_1 \times \mathbb{P}_3\). The idea of the construction is as follows: An embedding \(X \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}_1 \times \mathbb{P}_3\) is given by two line bundles \(L_1\) and \(L_3\) such that the complete linear system \(|L_i |\) defines the composed map \(X \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}_1 \times \mathbb{P}_3 \to \mathbb{P}_i\), \(i = 1,3\). The crucial point is that \(L_3\) is a line bundle of type \((1,4)\). Using results by the reviewer, the author and \textit{D. van Straten} [Math. Ann. 285, No. 4, 625-646 (1989; Zbl 0714.14028)] all embeddings \(X \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}_1 \times \mathbb{P}_3\) are constructed.
