    Let \(x^ \alpha e^{-x}\), \(\alpha>-1\), be a Laguerre weight, and let \(L^ \alpha_ k\) be the Laguerre polynomials. In the paper the structure of the multiplier space regarding Laguerre-type expansions is investigated with respect to the weighted \(L^ p\) spaces \[ L^ p_{v(\gamma)}= \left\{ f \Bigl| \| f\|_{L^ p_{v(\gamma)}}= \left(\int^ \infty_ 0 | f(x)|^ p x^ \gamma dx\right)^{1/p}< \infty\right\}. \] By defining \[ l^ \alpha_ k(x)= (k!/\Gamma(k+ \alpha+ 1))^{1/2} e^{- x/2} L^ \alpha_ k(x), \] one gets a system with nice convolution structure. The multiplier space \(M^ p_{\alpha,\gamma}\) consists of all sequences \(m_ k\) for which \[ \Bigl\| \sum m_ k a_ k l^ \alpha_ k\Bigr\|_{L^ p_{v(\gamma)}}\leq C\Bigl\|\sum a_ k l^ \alpha_ k\Bigr\|_{L^ p_{v(\gamma)}} \] for any finite sum with a constant \(C\) independent of the coefficients \(\{a_ k\}\). The main theorem of the paper is that the condition \[ \| m_ \infty\|+ \sup_ n\left( \sum^{2n}_{k= n} k^{-1} | k^ s\Delta^ s m_ k|^ 2\right)^{1/2}< \infty \] implies that the sequence \(m\) is in \(M^ p_{\alpha,\gamma}\) provided \(s> \alpha+ 1\), and \[ (\alpha+ 1)\max\{- p/2, -1\}< \gamma- \alpha< (\alpha+ 1)\min\{p/2, p- 1\}. \] As a corollary, a transplantation theorem is proven for the system \({\mathcal L}^ \alpha_ k(x)= x^{\alpha/2} l^ \alpha_ k(x)\), which says that \[ \Bigl \|\sum b_ k {\mathcal L}^ \alpha_ k\Bigr\|_{L^ p_{v(\delta)}}\leq C\Bigl\|\sum b_ k {\mathcal L}^ \beta_ k\Bigr\|_{L^ p_{v(\delta)}} \] provided \(\alpha\), \(\beta\geq 0\) and \(-1< \delta< p-1\) (and in some other cases). This extends a recent result of Kanjin. It also implies that in the associated multiplier space the parameter \(\alpha\) is not an essential one.
