Considering the complete Heyting algebra \(H\) as codomain, the author introduces the notion of the category \({\mathcal R}el (H)\) of fuzzy relational spaces and studies some of its nice features from the view point of the topological universe [\textit{L. D. Nel}, Contemp. Math. 30, 244-276 (1984; Zbl 0548.46054)]. The author shows that \({\mathcal R}el (H)\) is cartesian closed over \({\mathcal S}et\) [\textit{H. Herrlich}, Math. Colloq., Univ. Cape Town 9, 1-16 (1974; Zbl 0318.18011)]\ and points out that the category \({\mathcal R}el\) of all relational spaces is a subcategory of \({\mathcal R}el (H)\). [For part II see ibid. 63, No. 1, 73-79 (1994).].
