This paper is a very interesting discussion of density curves introduced and applied from the second part of the 18th century to describe the distribution of errors. Here is the list of the most important contributors: Boscovich, Simpson, Lambert, D. Bernoulli, Lagrange, Laplace, Gauss, Adrian, Cournot, De Morgan, Newcomb, Lehman-Filhés, Eddington, Ogorodnikoff, P. Lévy, Student. One has the impression that the introduction of stable densities in the twenties was the last important work in this field. There are, however, many recent developments due to e.g. P. Findeisen, C. R. Rao, J. K. Ghosh, H. Teicher. Exact references and further density curves in the theory of errors can be found in \textit{Z. Buczolich} and the reviewer [Adv. Appl. Math. 10, No. 4, 439-456 (1989; Zbl 0701.62037)].
