The author describes a procedure to detect the stability limit responsible for the difficulty. From it a detection algorithm can be added to the order selection logic in an experimental version of the ordinary differential equation solver VODE. The effectiveness of this algorithm in lowering the order to avoid the stability limit is illustrated by the numerical test on an advection-diffusion problem.
