Using Poisson's equation as a prototype model, the authors discuss ways to combine error estimates used for adaptive error control with multigrid methods. Error estimates for adaptive control are used to assume that the discrete equations are solved exactly. The authors exhibit a way to allow approximate discrete solutions, as they result from iterative methods. It is shown, that the total error may be estimated with a multigrid solver from the residual. The paper concludes with some numerical computations for the prototype example problem.
