This paper presents a rather thorough study of the zero-varieties of holomorphic functions \(f\) in the unit ball \({\mathbf B}^n\) satisfying the growth condition \(\log|f(z)|\leq c_f \lambda(|z|)\), where \(\lambda:[0,1) \to {\mathbf R}^+\) is an increasing function with different growth restrictions. First, a basic sufficient condition is found and investigated. It is inspired by a condition of \textit{N. Th. Varopoulos} for the zeros of \(H^p\) functions [Pac. J. Math. 88, 189-246 (1980; Zbl 0454.32006)], and is obtained following Lelong's approach, which amounts to solving a \(\partial\overline \partial\)-equation with appropriate estimates. Then the authors specialize to \(\lambda(r) = \log e/(1-r)\), which corresponds to the space \(A^{-\infty}\), to further investigate their condition and to see how it is related to the so-called uniform Blaschke condition and other Carleson-type conditions. A main result is that the uniform Blaschke condition implies the condition of Bruna and Massaneda. Second, some necessary conditions are deduced. Of these we mention an extension of \textit{B. Korenblum}'s necessary and sufficient condition for the space \(A^{-\infty}\), \(n = 1\) [Acta Math. 135, 187-219 (1975; Zbl 0323.30030)]. For \(n>1\), it is proved that a natural analogue of Korenblum's condition is necessary when \(\lambda\) is ``slowly increasing''; roughly speaking, the idea is that certain ``Blaschke sums'' have a natural bound in all star-shaped domains of a special type. While Korenblum uses estimates of conformal mapping, the authors use potential theoretic arguments. Finally, some interesting results are proved for a more restrictive class of functions, consisting of \(f\) so that certain local averages (in the Bergman metric) of \(|\log |f|\) are bounded. In particular, when \(n=1\), it is proved that a sequence is the zero sequence of such a function if and only if it is a finite union of interpolating sequences.
