Theorems on the boundedness of certain commutators have been obtained by various authors for different interpolation methods [for the real method see e.g. \textit{B. Jawerth, R. Rochberg} and \textit{G. Weiss}, Ark. Mat. 24, 191-219 (1986; Zbl 0655.41005)]. The present paper develops an abstract approach to these results, formulated in terms of interpolation functors, (almost) compatible pairs of interpolators and almost optimal elections. This should clarify the analogies between the definitions in the special cases (various examples are presented) and gives simplified proofs for several theorems. For related work of the authors on this topic see Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 175, 125-133 (1996; Zbl 0896.46014), and Rev. Mat. Univ. Complutense Madr. 9, Spec. Iss., 91-108 (1996; Zbl 0871.46036).
