It is proved that if a Hermitian matrix is partially specified, and we can specify the other entries to obtain some maximal rank with a possibly non-Hermitian matrix, then we can specify them so as to obtain this rank with a Hermitian matrix. The authors correct an error in their earlier proof in the general case, and study the analogous problem over an arbitrary field.
