Let \(G\) be a finite group. The integral group ring \(\mathbb{Z} G\) admits an augmentation mapping and let \(V(\mathbb{Z} G)\) be the group of those units of \(\mathbb{Z} G\) which have augmentation 1. Following a suggestion of \textit{A. Weiss} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 415, 175-187 (1991; Zbl 0744.16019)], one divides the discussion of the structure of the conjugacy classes of finite subgroups \(U\) of \(V(\mathbb{Z} G)\) into two parts. Firstly, one determines the set of subgroups of \(V(\mathbb{Z} G)\) which are conjugate to some \(U\) in the units of the group ring of the \(q\)-adic integers \(V(\widehat\mathbb{Z}_q G)\) for all primes \(q\). Varying \(U\), the classes obtained this way are called `genera' of \(V(\mathbb{Z} G)\). Secondly one examines each genus separately. In the paper under review this is carried out for dihedral groups of prime index \(p\). The description is complete for primes \(p\) satisfying some arithmetical conditions. For any \(p\), those genera which are represented by subgroups of \(G\) are computed. The result is formulated in terms of class numbers of certain abelian number fields.
