The asymptotic Moore-Penrose inversion of singular integral operators by means of trigonometric collocation and the finite section method is studied. Both weak and strong versions of these methods are considered. The authors derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the applicability of the weak method and sufficient conditions for the strong method. These conditions involve a certain asymptotic resp. exact kernel structure of the approximation matrices.
