In the last years a number of authors (El Daou, Khajah Hosseini and others) discussed relations of equivalence between a variety of differential numerical methods for approximate solutions. This paper deals with the above problem. Here the authors discuss structural relations between the tau method and the finite element method. For the Dirichlet problem in dimensions one and two they show that the difference between the solutions given by each of these methods is bounded by \(O(h)\) in the Sobolev space \(H^1_0 (\Omega)\).
