The authors review some results concerning their programme of analyzing gauge theories in terms of physical observables (i.e., gauge invariants) and outline the main ideas of their reduction procedure. It is shown that the functional integral of QED can be reduced to an integral over gauge invariants. The algebra of Grassmann algebra-valued invariants for one-flavour chromodynamics is investigated and, finally, the functional integral for this theory is derived.
