The subject of this paper is the boundary value problem \( -\triangle u +|u|^{q-1}u=0\) in a bounded smooth domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) with \(u=\nu\) on the boundary. Here \(q>1\) and in particular the emphasis is put on the supercritical case \(q\geq(N+1)/(N-1)\). In the first part all bounded Borel measures are characterized for which a solution exists. Moreover comparison principles are derived and the uniqueness of the solution is established. The second part deals with the characterization of positive not necessarily bounded measures for which a boundary trace is defined. Necessary and sufficient conditions for such measures are given such that a solution with the prescribed trace exists. In this case there is no uniqueness of the solution. The paper generalizes some earlier work on the trace problem for semilinear elliptic equations.
