The Sturm-Liouville problem is considered on the semiaxis \([0,\infty)\) with a real fast decreasing potential \(q(x)\in C^{2}[0,\infty)\), \(q(x)\to -\infty\) as \(x\to\infty\). Under some additional conditions the spectral function \(\rho_{\alpha}(\lambda)\) is absolutely continuous. Here, \(\lambda\) is the spectral parameter and \(\alpha\) characterizes the boundary condition at \(x=0\). The author derives a representation for \(\rho_{\alpha}(\lambda)\) in the form of series. This series representation is used to obtain an asymptotic expansion for \(\rho_{\alpha}(\lambda)\) under circumstances more general than those in [\textit{M. S. P. Eastham}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A, Math. 128, No. 1, 37-45 (1998; Zbl 0896.34017)].
